What is Diamond Painting?

DISCOVER THE JOY OF DIAMOND PAINTING

Diamond painting is a relatively new craft activity that's been getting a lot of buzz recently, and with good reason. It’s an easy-to-master craft that delivers beautiful frameable art in a matter of hours, evoking feelings of satisfaction and accomplishment along the way. There are thousands of kitted diamond painting designs to choose from, in a variety of design genres, sizes and skill levels. But first let’s get to the heart of the matter: what is diamond painting exactly?

In a nut shell, diamond painting is a technique in which diamond-like facets are applied to a design-printed surface using a diamond painting pen or stylus that’s been dipped in wax. The creatives out there often describe diamond painting as a cross between paint-by-number and cross-stitch, but instead of using paints or embroidery floss, it’s a rainbow of sparkly diamond-like facets that bring a charted design to life.

Quick note here: Diamond Dotz® is a pioneer in the diamond painting category, that’s why we’re so good at it!

MASTER THE PROCESS: HOW TO DIAMOND PAINT WITH A KIT

Let’s go! We’ve got some good news: it’s super easy to get started because there are plenty of options when it comes to choosing your very first Diamond Dotz® diamond painting kit.

PICK A THEME

You may want to pick your first diamond painting based on themes you like. Will it be a floral? Maybe you’re into birds or cats. If you’ve always coveted a famous artist, like Van Gogh or Klimt, we’ve got a large collection of those, too, and they are always best sellers.

SELECT A SKILL LEVEL

If you want to be more straight-forward in your approach, choose by skill level. We have a wide variety of options in beginner, intermediate and advanced evel kits. There are also entire collections of diamond painting kits, like DOTZ® DÉCOR aimed at new dotters. Checking the Dotz count on the kit you choose is also a good way to go – the fewer the Dotz, the quicker and easier it is to complete.

Take a look at the French Lavender DOTZ® DÉCOR design above – it only has 2256 Dotz gems so comes together in a jiffy! It’s a fantastic “first” diamond painting.

CHOOSE A FULL- OR PARTIAL-DRILL DESIGN

Another choice comes in whether you want a canvas that is totally covered with Dotz (referred to as “full coverage” or “full drill”) or if you want a canvas that has a printed background, with only certain elements of the design to be covered in Dotz (referred to as “partial coverage” or “partial drill”). Full versus partial coverage is a personal preference, but in general the fewer the Dotz a kit has, the easier the design will be.

SEE HOW EASY IT IS TO DIAMOND PAINT

Once you’ve chosen your kit, check out the easy diamond painting technique. There are just a few steps to master diamond painting, but put simply, it’s just dip and dot! That. Is. It. You can literally open your kit, and dive right in.

Because diamond painting is remarkably easy to master, a beginner can quickly become a pro, honing skills and tackling designs that are larger and more intricate with very little learning curve. No barrier to entry. No frustration.

DIAMOND PAINTING IS GOOD FOR THE SOUL

The fact that diamond painting is easy to master leads to another really important reason that crafters love diamond painting – and that’s because it delivers big time when it comes to providing a sense of accomplishment and pride. So, the success comes from ease, the ease delivers fantastic results, and then you want to try another canvas. You see how this works?

As skills become advanced, diamond painters can tackle larger, more intricate pieces … it’s a snowball that just keeps on growing! In fact, many diamond painters are self-proclaimed diamond painting addicts, meaning they just can’t stop diamond painting! It’s a hobby that can quickly take hold because it truly delivers real satisfaction and joy as you work, paired with a beautiful piece of sparkling handmade art when you’re done.

The diamond painting process itself is rhythmic and relaxing – once you start, you won’t want to stop! It’s a hobby you can enjoy alone (it’s great for “me time”), or share with friends and family. Win. Win. Win.
