Use an Embroidery Hoop to Frame a Diamond Painting Canvas

Use an Embroidery Hoop to Frame a Diamond Painting Canvas

Here is a super clever DIY idea for you. Did you know that you can “frame” your finished diamond painting canvas in an embroidery hoop? Glue on some pompom trim for extra pizazz and your finished diamond painting is ready to display.

This is one of the easiest framing solutions for a finished partial-drill diamond painting canvas. Embroidery hoops come in a variety of sizes, and so do diamond paintings! For this project, it’s important to make sure your diamond painting canvas is a bit larger than the hoop, but that the dotted area of your design fits inside the hoop.

Read this crafty tutorial and see how easy it is to frame your diamond painting using an inexpensive embroidery hoop.

CHOOSE A DIAMOND PAINTING DESIGN

Let’s get started! To complete this project you’ll need your finished Diamond Dotz® diamond painting canvas, plus a glue gun, an embroidery hoop and some decorative trim (if using).

When you choose this creative finishing option, it’s important to consider the design and the size of the hoop. That’s because the design needs to be a partial-drill design with a bit of negative space (canvas) surrounding it, so that the hoop can grab the canvas and not the dotted portion of the design when you snap it in place. This project is ideal for a relatively small diamond painting canvas.

HINT: This is the same concept you’d use to frame an embroidered piece within a hoop – just think of the dotted diamond painting as your embroidered motif. Make sense?

The Diamond Dotz® Flower Mandala diamond painting is an excellent choice for an 8” embroidery hoop.

GATHER THE SUPPLIES TO FRAME YOUR DIAMOND ART

When your diamond painting canvas is finished, gather your embroidery hoop, glue gun and trim.

Separate the hoop’s top and bottom, and lay the canvas on top of the bottom hoop. Snap the top hoop in place, cinching the diamond painting canvas between the top and bottom pieces of the hoop (this is the same way you would secure a piece of embroidery). Once the design is centered properly within the hoop, use your scissors to trim away the excess diamond painting canvas. Apply glue to the underside of your trim with a glue gun (if using), and then press the trim in place on the outside of the hoop.

FAQs: CREATIVE WAYS TO DISPLAY DIAMOND PAINTINGS

Why would I frame my diamond painting if it’s already finished?

While it’s optional, framing adds structure, enhances the presentation, and makes displaying your piece much simpler. Framing your canvas in an embroidery hoop is quick and easy; the addition of pompoms is a creative touch.

Is it okay to display a diamond painting in a frame without glass?

Yes. Glass isn’t required and removing it helps preserve the shine and dimensional look of the drills. Whether you’re using a traditional frame, or something fun like an embroidery hoop, it’s the perfect way to let the drills shine.

What if my diamond painting is slightly larger than my embroidery hoop or other frame?

Light trimming around the border usually solves the issue — just leave the drill area untouched.

Are there creative ways to display a diamond painting without custom framing?

Yes — an embroidery hoop is certainly creative! You can also try canvas wrapping, scroll-style hangers, clip frames, or floating frames for an easy DIY look.
